Requiem Mass Offered for Dane Priest Killed 20 Years Ago

A Solemn Requiem Mass was offered at St. Mary of Pine Bluff Catholic Church on March 3 for the soul of Rev. Fr. Alfred Kunz, whose murder in the village of Dane 20 years ago remains unsolved. Fr. John Zuhlsdorf presided at the Requiem Mass in place of Bishop Robert Morlino, who presided at the funeral of another priest of the Diocese of Madison.

The Mass was attended by faithful from around Dane County. News media, including NBC 15, ABC 27, CBS 3 and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, were also in attendance.

Father Kunz was discovered murdered on March 4, 1998 in a hallway of the St. Michael Catholic School in Dane. Fr. Kunz had been pastor of St. Michael Catholic Church for more than three decades. Despite the largest police investigation in Dane County history, no arrests have been made in the murder. The Dane County Sheriff’s Department this week began releasing new details about the killing in hopes they spur someone to come forward with information that could lead to solving the case.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Dane County Sheriff’s TIPS line at 608-284-6900 or email tips@danesheriff.com. The Sheriff’s Department set up a Facebook page in Father Kunz’s name to share information on the murder. #whokilledfatherkunz
